During the 2008 holiday season, The Institute of Interior Design united with the Edison & Ford Winter Estates to create a showcase that combines both historic and contemporary furnishings. Visitors to this Historic Landmark had the opportunity to catch a glance at the student’s talent. Under the direction of Linda Petersen, a group of Residential Design students undertook the transformation of the Caretaker’s house as a class project. This residential design project exposed the students involved to concepts of historic preservation and restoration, applying principles of design to the interior of an original, Florida-style home.
During their first visit to the Estates, the interior design students completed measurements and compiled an inventory of the antiques available on-site. Space planning for the interior of a very small space required a studied balance between viewing areas and the traffic flow of visitors. The next assignment was to visit the showrooms at the Miromar Design Center in search of solutions to the principles and elements of interior design. After working together to select the antiques they wished to use, they looked for an aesthetically pleasing combination of furnishings, rugs, fabrics, and accessories to blend the old with the new.
A project such as this one enhances the interior design student’s understanding of the true definition of a professional Interior Designer.
